New York Times COMPANY NEWS; FRANCE TO STOP SALES OF MAJOR HAVANA CIGAR BRANDS Connoisseur French smokers will soon be deprived of some of their favorite Havana cigars. A spokeswoman for the French state-owned tobacco distributor Seita said yesterday that it would stop selling Monte Cristo, H. Upmann and Por Larranaga cigars on Sept. 7 as a result of a Paris Appeal Court ruling in March on a trademark dispute. The court upheld a 1989 French ruling that the three brand names belong not to the Cuban state but to their original private owners, who fled the island at the time of its Marxist revolution in 1959. The Spanish tobacco concern Tabacalera is now their lawful owner in France in the judges' view, after the exiled cigar makers sold their rights to the trademarks in the 1970's. The spokeswoman said Cuban cigars with other brand names might still be sold in France.(Reuters) |
